Top 4 Things to Look for in Your Wedding Cake Artist
I got together with cake artist Stacey from Cake on Sunday to create a fun little series for all of the wedding cake lovers out there. Today's topic is advice from Stacey on the top 4 things to look for in your wedding cake artist. Believe me, these are important! Wedding cakes are such an amazing compliment to your wedding day. Whether you are looking for something elegant or more modern, these tips will help steer you in the right direction!
A love for cakes…and love. Passion is oversold in our world today. What does everyone say? Success follows passion. Follow your passion. Passion is a life-long journey. I’ll spare you the others. However, with cakes, and especially wedding cakes, you need someone who loves what they are doing and wants to make sure they provide you with exactly what you want on your wedding day. Has your potential artist asked you questions about your wedding? Are they excited to be this special part of your day? You’ll feel their love and happiness and it will show in their work on your big day.
Reliability. Does this need to be said? I don’t know. But what I do know is that this is obviously important. Does your cake designer respond to emails, phone calls, etc. in a timely fashion? Have they rescheduled every meeting you’ve set with them? Are they always running late? These are some red flags that could mean you can’t count on your cake being exactly where it needs to be, exactly when it needs to be there. You will have a million other things running through your head this day – if your cake will make it to the venue should not be one of them.
Knowledge of what will and what won’t work. Not all cakes (and fillings and toppings) are created equal. Your cake artist should be able to provide you tips and suggestions to make sure your perfect cake can come to life and last through the night. For example portions dictate size. Your cake artist should be able to tell you what size cake you need to feed all of your guests so that you are not paying for cake you don’t need, or sending anyone home dessert-less. They should also be able to tell you what designs, decorations, etc. will work best for you on your budget to ensure your cake is perfect. This is especially important on a tight budget.
A style that you like. Just like a painter, cake artists have their own style. Think Picasso and Van Gogh. Check out pictures of their past cakes to get a feel for their style and talent and make sure it fits with you. A designer who prefers to work with columns and buttercream decorations might not be the best fit for your fashion-forward fondant beauty.
